Garth

 Good evening Hunters,

This week we will be discussing a slightly different character in the supernatural verse: Garth.

Garth is one of the funnier characters in the show because he's not the standard hunter type that we have seen/discussed up to this point.

In comparison to Sam and Dean, Garth appears like the quirky, nerdy younger brother. Garth is short and very thin in comparison to the boys, who are tall and broad-shouldered. He may not look like much, but Garth is very knowledgeable, scrappy, and brings a positive attitude to hunting.

When Dean meets Garth he gives him the cold shoulder because he thinks he doesn't take the job seriously and that he is a dead weight on the case. But Garth shows Dean his worth and that there are different ways to approach hunting than just a bruting attitude who uses force to kill monsters.

Garth shows the boys that brain power in hunting is just as important as strength and striking first. He also teaches them to lighten up and lean on each other when they're struggling.

The interesting thing that happens with Garth is that when we see him a season later, he has become the "New Bobby" in the hunting community. To those who haven't read my last post, Bobby is a former hunter turned central intelligence person for the hunting community. He helps hunters with aliases, monster information, etc., and virtually helps out wherever he can when a hunter calls for help.

So Bobby eventually dies in season 7 from a bullet wound, and so the hunting community is left without an information source. Since Sam and Dean were absent due to dealing with their own issues, Garth steps up into the role. Dean doesn't accept Garth in this role out of grief for Bobby, but after seeing how good Garth is in the role, he eventually accepts him, and they become good friends.

Garth is a good character in this show because he portrays the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" and that there is more than one way to hunt if you choose to put some energy into it.

For the viewers out there, I have a question, do you consider yourself someone who judges a book by its cover? Why/ why not?
