The Men of Letters Bunker
Happy Sunday, Hunters!
This week's blog will discuss a large turning point in Supernatural, one of my favorites in the series.
So up until this point, we have talked about hunting, monsters, weapons, etc., the whole nine about what the Winchester brothers mainly do throughout this show, but one thing I haven't touched on is how widespread the hunting network is.
In season 7/8, Sam and Dean run across the knowledge of a society called the Men of Letters.
The Men of Letters were a society active in the 1940s/1950s that dealt with mysteries that are not easily explainable to men. AKA a higher order of monster hunters who think they are better than actual hunters. Only a few hunters were trusted to know about the Men of Letters for security reasons.
The boys find out about this society through their paternal grandfather (Henry Winchester), who used a spell to travel through time and ended up in their present-day 2013 to escape a demon called Abaddon, who is a Knight of Hell (a special kind of dangerous). Henry is trying to protect a key to the order of letters. This key unlocks an underground bunker belonging to a society with state-of-the-art technology (in the 1950s), weapons, and classified information about the order, its mission, and its members.
Henry trusts the key to Sam and Dean before he ultimately dies at the hands of Abaddon at the end of the episode. Since they are legacies and the last living members of the society, they inherit the bunker.
This bunker is a vital tool throughout the rest of the show run because up until this point, Sam and Dean had no permanent address or place they came back to post-hunts. They went from place to place as they found cases, but now they have a safe and secure home they can rest in when they aren't out on a case.
In this bunker resides state-of-the-art equipment, artifacts, scrolls, spellbooks, weapons, etc., whatever tool you can think of to learn about, defend against, and fight the supernatural. These tools make hunting a lot easier for Sam and Dean, expanding their knowledge of Supernatural creatures, preparing them for the challenges they ultimately face.
Despite the later seasons of the show being criticized by many, the bunker addition to the series, in my opinion, gave a cool element to the show that hadn't been explored before. They touch on the history of the Winchester family, the history of enemies, weapons, and the hunting atmosphere that makes the show more enticing to watch.
