Dog Dean Afternoon
Good Afternoon Hunters!
I have a fun blog for you this week with a funny episode in the Supernatural series: Dog Dean Afternoon.
This episode puts a whole new spin on the idea of a man's best friend.
In this episode, Sam and Dean are investigating the death of a taxidermist, and as it turns out, it's the dog of the first victim who is the only witness to both crimes.
Sam and Dean investigate the case, and while they didn't know yet what kind of monster they were dealing with, they decided to see if they can somehow communicate with the dog, Colonel. Sam brews a potion, and Dean drinks it. The spell is supposed to make it so they can hear the dog's thoughts through a mind meld. Skeptical at first, Dean tries to talk to the dog and hear its thoughts, but nothing happens.
But after a minute, Dean finds he can understand the dog's speech and the speech of every animal around them. The funny bit is that Dean also starts to take on dog-like tendencies like scratching, playing fetch, hanging his head out the window, and harassing the mailman as he walks past.
Through this newly acquired ability, the boys return to the animal shelter where the second murder took place, and Dean chats up the other dogs in the kennel to learn if any of them saw the crime better than the Colonel ( he saw the guy but not the crime per sei).
The monster in this episode turns out to be a human dabbling in Shaman rituals that involve the organs of random animals. By ingesting the specific organ from each animal, the ingester would gain an ability that the animal processed, like cheetah liver for speed, and chameleon brain, to blend into your surroundings. The man was mixing ingredients in his efforts to slow down and treat his cancer. Sam and Dean eventually kill him.
The fun takeaway from this episode, besides the morbid eating animal organs, was just the comedy of hearing what animals have to say when humans can understand them. We see dogs, cats, mice, and more in this episode, and they are just as sassy as the average human in speech. Humans may yet one day be able to communicate with animals, but right now, we can only imagine what they're thinking and saying when all we hear is random sounds.
If you could communicate with any animal on earth, what would it be and why?
Hi Emily! I've never watched Supernatural before, but this blog was so descriptive I felt like I really learned a lot about the show and characters. Great work. ~Kaity Johnson
