Fan Fiction

Morning Hunters,

Welcome back to the blog, and Happy Monday.

Our discussion today revolves around a special episode of Supernatural labeled: Fan Fiction.

This episode is exactly what it sounds like. To give context, in season 4, we discover that the Winchester brother's journey as hunters was turned into book series by a man named Chuck, who turned out to be a prophet of God who had visions of their adventures and turned them into books (the series wasn't very successful and didn't go far, but they had a small fan base). The books covered the show's beginning in 2005 until Dean goes to hell at the end of season 3.

Flash forward to season 10, and the boys are investigating the disappearance of a teacher at an all-girls high school when they see that the Supernatural books inspire the musical the school is putting on. They find out later the monster they are facing is Calliope, a muse that was attracted to the play because of its unique story and abundance of supernatural creatures, death, and resurrection. The interpretation of their lives puts off the boys since it does take a fan-fiction approach with some outlandish additions to the story that never occurred.

This is a special episode because Sam and Dean have been going through a standstill in their lives, and the musical makes them reflect on what they've been through and where they are now. Dean had recently become a demon after the mark of Cain infected him, and he's recently been turned back, and because of this huge revelation, the boys are attempting to find normalcy again in the aftermath.

As I said, the musical features the first three seasons of the show, in which a lot goes down; this episode, while goofy is heavy in a few ways because the hunter's life is a long, hard, destructive road. Hunting is the only life that the Winchesters have ever known, including angels, demons, hellhounds, leviathans, etc. So much has happened that they never expected, their relationships have been challenged, and they're still alive.

The last scene in the episode where the cast of the musical sings "Carry on wayward son" by Kansas is where we see the ultimate reflection of their lives and what they want to do now. It's a tear-jerker because nobody deserves to understand or know the horrors they've survived because that's what they do, help people and hunt monsters. That is their normal, and this case helped give them the boost they needed to keep going; after all, they got work to do.
